MGM Protest, Golders Green Tube Station

MGM Protest, Golders Green Tube Station. Raising awareness, Promoting Brit Shalom and J4MB (Justice 4 Men and Boys political party UK).

Interesting debates with several people. Some defended infant cutting. Lots of the cut men thought there were health benefits. I guess that is one way of justifying it – although research does not back this claim up!

Many people were interested in the Jewish intactivist movement – which has a long history. Some recognised the human rights issue about consent but felt that it was a decision a parent should still have – often saying that “medical benefits” justified this – as well as religious reasons. I asked some “What if the child grows up to not be religious?” The most common answer being that it was only a minor procedure – and a useless flap of skin. Of course you can’t know any different if you don’t have that “flap” …

Many people were not interested in talking but took leaflets about Brit Shalom and Men’s right’s issues produced by Justice 4 Men and Boys.

Several people declared their religious feelings about MGM as an integral part of their religious life – and did not see MGM and FGM as comparable at all.

One Jewish lady was not sure who Joshua was but was robustly defending MGM for parents’ religious reasons – I was trying to explain that if she reads her Torah she will find that many of the Israelites were not circumcised as babies in the Joshua story – they decided to get mutilated as adults at Gilgal – producing “The mound of foreskins” (check your bible). So maybe cutting could be left to adulthood as there is a biblical precedent for this.

Patrick Smyth: The intactivist message, including Brit Shalom, was promoted in Golders Green yesterday with Mike Buchanan of J4MB and other staunch human rights activists. In all the five years that I have been protesting this issue on the streets I have never before experienced so much opposition and ridicule from women. We had mostly civilised and rational discussion with the men who had been subjected to the ancient ritual.

… There were many interesting conversations, including one with a man who was wearing the Tzitzis and must have been over 60, and yet he informed us that his mother left him intact! I dressed all in black for a change as befits my mood at the moment. Much more to report and more pictures/video as and when I collect my thoughts.

The Police attended and dealt with public access, protesters, and public even handedly and sensitively and the small demo of about ten protesters was peaceful. A very small number of passers by were rude and felt that there was no issue to protest about. The vast majority of people were polite even if they did not agree with our message.

Ten Horrifically Botched Circumcisions

Harrowing reading. Anyone who has seen a male leap around after catching himself in his trouser zipper will be able to imagine the unnecessary pain and mutilation involved.

Circumcision is one of the most common and historic surgical procedures in the world, dating as far back as ancient Egypt. Like any medical procedure, there can be serious risks involved which are often overlooked given the innumerable rate of success. But when these errors do occur, the results are not only physically devastating, but psychologically and emotionally traumatizing as well. Sometimes, people’s lives are damaged forever . . . if they’re lucky enough to survive.

Religious Parent’s Decision to Cut Boy Baby Rejected by the Grown Man

Another brave young man speaks out about his dismay with his Muslim father’s choice to have him cut. The mother was not Muslim and the boy grew up to not be a Muslim. Whose religious “rights” or rites should be observed? This was surely child abuse…

The practice of male infant circumcision is discussed in this video.

Review: In ‘Happily After Ever,’ a Couple’s Impossible Choice

Human Genital Mutilation affects all children – not just girls – many people are aware of the intactivist debate about genital cutting of boys, circumcision, but not of the plight of intersex children whose lives have been made difficult by unelective gender correction surgery as babies. Sometimes a Surgeon makes an error and allocates the wrong gender to a child. Legislation is needed to prevent such intervention until the person has reached puberty and can make an informed choice. Intersex children have been hidden from modern society and its preoccupation with “normality” another play examining this issue premiers in New York …

“It doesn’t seem like a setup for a play about gender identity, but it is. When Janet (Molly-Ann Nordin) becomes pregnant, she and Darren (Jeffrey Brian Adams) expect a cookie-cutter-perfect addition to their retro-photogenic Ward-and-June-Cleaver lives. But their baby is born with ambiguous genitalia, and they suddenly have to think more deeply — about whether and how to resolve that ambiguity. Should the baby be a boy? A girl? Should they wait and let the child decide? Profound love and terrible fear collide.”

A play about Human Genital Mutilation: BOY: by Anna Ziegler

INSPIRED BY A TRUE STORY. Anna Ziegler’s Boy explores the tricky terrain of finding love amidst the confusion of sexual identity, and the inextricable bond between a doctor and patient. In the 1960s, a well-intentioned doctor convinces the parents of a male infant to raise their son as a girl after a terrible accident. Two decades later, the repercussions of that choice continue to unfold.

Based on a true story … Human Genital Mutilation, “the terrible accident”, a circumcision, of a baby boy went badly wrong with the penis being totally amputated – the Doctors decide to “re-assign” female gender to make good their mistake – which does not work out – as he was a boy “inside”…

The play’s pundits and some promoters are talking about intersex children as a result of its production – which is great – although this child was not born intersex – he had the wrong gender purposefully allotted as a result of a botched circumcision. Medical curiosity? Penis transplants were not available back then…

NY Times Review: Man Deals With Gender Cards He’s Given (Not Born With)

“The play is inspired by the true story of David Peter Reimer, whose genitalia were mutilated during a botched medical circumcision when he was an infant. His parents consulted John Money, a specialist in gender identity, who believed that gender was determined more by nurture than nature and encouraged them to raise David as a girl.

The ways in which Money’s approach backfired are chronicled in John Colapinto’s fascinating book “As Nature Made Him: The Boy Who Was Raised as a Girl” (2001), a grim portrait of a tortured soul. Dealing with the same subject, “Boy” is so determined not to be sensational or bleak that it bleaches itself of troubling complexity.”

The saddest thing is that this person’s life would never have been so disrupted if Human Genital Mutilation of children was banned…

Simon Zobel. The hermaphrodite question: when scientific standards, medicine and culture collide.

Why are girls the only children protected under the law?

Human Genital Mutilation can be inflicted on all children – including those whose physical gender is not completely female or male at birth. Doctors used to be taught that it was “for the best” to operate on intersex people as early as possible in childhood so that a gender could be allotted to the child – according to the Surgeon’s best guess. This approach has had very bad consequences – some individuals get allocated the wrong gender – a better approach is to wait until the child can give informed consent after puberty when the natural gender becomes self apparent.

Forced infant circumcision harms transsexual women too.

Another group of people affected by Human Genital Mutilaion (HGM). A male to female transsexual’s surgically reassigned genitalia relies on tissue containing nerves from the original glans and foreskin …

Stephanie is an Intactivist and a trans woman. In her coming out monologue she talks about her genital mutilation as an infant to raise awareness of how forced infant circumcision harms trans women. She says:

“Another thing I struggle with happened when I was an infant. Something happened to me that I did not consent to that will forever decrease my sexual pleasure both pre and post sex reassignment surgery. The euphemism used was “circumcision” but I think female genital mutilation is a better term as it effects me as a woman. I feel absolutely violated. I feel that this will impact me sexually today and in the future. I am angry about this and yet many are upset when I talk about this. I lost my best friend in January over this topic.”

When changing anatomical sex from male to female, the testicles are removed, and the skin of foreskin and penis is usually inverted, as a flap preserving blood and nerve supplies (a technique pioneered by Sir Harold Gillies in 1951), to form a fully sensitive vagina (vaginoplasty). A clitoris fully supplied with nerve endings (innervated) can be formed from part of the glans of the penis. If the patient has been circumcised (removal of the foreskin), or if the surgeon’s technique uses more skin in the formation of the labia minora, the pubic hair follicles are removed from some of the scrotal tissue, which is then incorporated by the surgeon within the vagina. Other scrotal tissue forms the labia majora.
