Circumcision Is Unethical and Unlawful.

American academic paper which raises all the main issues. Things are beginning to change in the USA. I hope to see all children, boys, girls, and intersex, protected from genital mutilation. The law and medical ethics should be applied without gender bias. If society can override the wishes of irrational religious people concerning gay marriage – then secular law should protect all children from religious blood rites. It is a sad condemnation of western society that the feelings of adults are addressed before the harm to children. Religion has no right to demand genital mutilation of boys – and everyone in society needs to wake up to this. People who promote this should be treated like people who promote FGM. Equality for boys.

50 years ago MGM in the USA – “One might as well attempt to explain the rites of voodoo!”

From a medical journal in the 1960s – forward thinking Doctor in the USA writes about this bizarre pseudo medical ritual that makes money for the private health services in the USA …

“… This ritual, however, has become so widespread in the United States that it is no longer much of a status symbol, and a situation has arisen where any recently delivered mother who is eccentric enough to wish her child to retain his prepuce, would be well advised to maintain permanent guard over it until such time as they both leave the hospital. The nursery staff of most American hospitals have an insatiable urge to remove the foreskin and this instinct often causes great concern among European women who do not subscribe to this practice and through force of circumstances have their baby in the United States. ”

Circumcision Math: Does it add up?

Excellent article on the odds of medical intervention being required for the male foreskin.

“… Let’s set ethical arguments about pain, consent, divine design, etc. aside for now. Let’s just look at the math. What are the odds that your son will actually need to have a circumcision later?”

Canadian Journal of Urology: Are physicians performing neonatal circumcisions well-trained?

Quite shocking to read that most of the Canadian Doctors in this study of surgical method and training had not received formal training for conducting infant MGM, and know less than might be expected about when not to do it …

Great that the medical community addressed the training issue after the study but sad that nobody thinks of the rights of the children here …

” … Conclusions: Our survey findings indicate that most physicians performing neonatal circumcisions in our community have received informal and unstructured training. This lack of formal instruction may explain the complications and unsatisfactory results witnessed in our pediatric urology practice. Many practitioners are not aware of the contraindications to neonatal circumcision and most non-surgeons perform the procedure without being able to handle common post-surgical complications. Based on our survey findings, we planned and carried out a formal training course to address these issues.”

New Autism Dispute: Is Circumcision a Factor?

Time Magazine article. This was a large study. The premise seems valid… Peer reviews … Has any study been made on girls who have suffered FGM/Female Circumcision?

Human Genital Mutilation, MGM covered in TIME. Trauma is associated with autism. Ripping back, separating the fused flesh (males’ foreskins are fused to the penis until puberty) and slicing the foreskin off a baby involves trauma – effective pain control is not possible without risk – so many infants are cut without anaesthetic. Ritual cutting has no pain relief.

“Even though TIME relies on criticism from a notorious pro-circumcision fanatic, and pulls its punches at the end, this is an extremely important piece.”

” … Dr. Morten Frisch is a Danish epidemiologist who led a study examining the link between circumcision and ASD. The study, published in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, found that boys who undergo circumcision are more likely to be diagnosed with autism by age 9. “Considering the widespread practice of non-therapeutic circumcision in infancy and childhood around the world,” the study states, “confirmatory studies should be given priority.”

And indeed, some studies do suggest that any pain early in life can have lasting effects on brain development… “

Ritual and Medical Circumcision among Filipino boys: Evidence of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

Academic paper from 2000 showing link between PTSD and MGM …

Some 1,577 boys satisfied the prescribed criteria (1,072 boys were circumcised under medical procedures; 505 boys were subjected to ritual circumcision) and were followed-up to ascertain whether the perceived trauma from genital cutting developed into symptoms of PTSD. Almost 70% of boys subjected to ritual circumcision and 51% of those subjected to medical circumcision fulfilled the DSM-IV criteria for a diagnosis of PTSD.

Urosepsis and postrenal acute renal failure in a neonate following circumcision with Plastibell device.

Description of serious complications from genital mutilation of baby boys, this demonstrates how unacceptable non-medical ritual cutting venues should be – intensive prompt medical back up was required to prevent death in this case…

We report a case of fulminant urosepsis, acute renal failure, and pyelonephritis in a 4-day-old male neonate secondary to impaction of a Plastibell circumcision device. Immediate medical management was initiated with fluid resuscitation and mechanical ventilation; thereby correcting life threatening complications. Pediatricians and Emergency Department physicians should be cognizant of the complications from Plastibell circumcision device in order to institute appropriate and timely management in neonates.
