Efforts to limit Human Genital Mutilation (HGM) of girls in Bristol UK. Bristol has a significant Muslim Somali population.

26 February 2016 Bristol has one of the highest number of incidents of FGM in the country. Campaigners in the city have been at the forefront of moves to prevent those at risk being taken abroad. Police say that since new laws were introduced in July 2015, they’ve successfully applied for protection orders for three young girls. “I am very clear that FGM is child abuse and must be treated as such. We must never lose sight that FGM is a violation of human rights that has lifelong health and emotional consequences. Working together we must eradicate this disgraceful crime for good.” SUE MOUNTSTEVENS, POLICE AND CRIME COMMISSIONER

Representatives from Avon and Somerset Police will be attending today’s conference in Easton, which is organised by the charity Forward.
